Delayed update 11/27/2021
Max saw the vet on 11/09/2021.
Due to an old injury Max was never sound on his front left. However, with Equioxx we have been able to keep him comfortable. He started going more lame on that foot so we had Dr. Johnson take a look at it. We did a nerve block and some x-rays to see what is going on. There are no significant changes to see so in the future on bad days we will just give him some banamine as well.
At this point it is all about keeping our old friend as comfortable, happy and in the best possible shape.
Max's vet bill was $315 if you would like to contribute to it.
Update 08/18/2021
First, we want to say thank you for all the prayers we received! It means a lot to us!
Last night we kept a close watch on Max. I went out a few times during the night with soaked forage pellets trying to hand feed him. He took a few bites each time and then lost interest again.
Our vet (team classic equine llc) came back out this morning so we could do more checks on him trying to find the source of his discomfort.
We did another complete dental check including x-rays covering every tooth and his sinuses.
The vet couldn't find anything! We were kind of hoping to see an infected root because this would be a somewhat easy fix, but nothing.
So we moved on to do a complete abdominal ultrasound! Again, nothing found.
Obviously, something is going on with him but physically we checked everything! It really comes down to his age and possibly cancer, which is, as we posted before, extremely hard to diagnose but on the end you couldn't really do anything about it because there is no real treatment.
Since Max really showed no interest in eating hay or grain, we decided to take him and the herd out to our big pasture in the back of our property. The vet agreed it's probably the best we can do right now for him. Our horses have free range of about 20 acres of pasture around the barn all summer long, but back there is just so much unlimited rich grass of different kinds to eat.
Max always absolutely loves being out there! It's his little happy place!
We usually don't let them back out there until mid September because a few horses are in training at this point of the year. But honestly, that doesn't really matter right now. All that counts is that Max hopefully bounces back. If not, at least we can say we tried everything and gave him a last good time!
We hope he is going to get over whatever is making him feel not himself, but we also made a promise to all of our horses to never let them suffer!
As you can see from the pic, he looks very happy right now, but at this point we have to accept the fact that time might be running out.

Update 08/17/2021
We are really worried about our sweet old boy Max.
Yesterday morning he didn't eat all of his grains and in the evening he didn't touch them.
He didn't show any signs of a colic, but his temperature was slightly high for him. The vet came out on an emergency call at 9:30pm and checked him through. We ran an SAA which came up zero...so no infection. No sign of impaction either. Couldn't find anything with his teeth.
Vet pump fluids in him just to be safe. Blood work came back this morning,too. Everything is pretty good considering his age. We started him on steroids at lunch time in hopes to kick up his appetite. So far he only nibbles a little on grass. It's really sad seeing him like this. However he is not lethargic at all and drinks water. At this point we are worried he might have cancer. Getting a really good diagnosis on this is extremely difficult.
Please include him in your prayers tonight.
It sure seems like age is catching up with him.
Update 04/24/2021
Our sweet boy Max is happy that the grass started to grow and the days and nights are warmer.
He enjoys being back out grazing in the big fields.
Max has been fighting a little ulcer in his right eye for about three weeks now, but otherwise he is healthy and looks great for his age.
The boy also finished his spring vaccines and got his sheath cleaned.
His total cost for vaccines, eye ointment etc was: $255.

Update 08/22/2020
Our sweet old boy Max is enjoying summertime. When it gets too hot, he gets to go inside the barn with the other horses to just chill out.
He had another dental float done on August 17, 2020 and it shows that he is now pushing 30 years.
We hope he has many more good years with us, just enjoying his retirement.
Update 04/15/2020
We are happy that our sweet old Max made it through the Winter. He enjoyed the warm days we had and took a lot of naps totally stretched out on the grass being warmed by the sun. Hopefully these nice temperatures will return soon.
We noticed that his eye site is getting worse. Luckily his best friend Digger always looks out for him. If Digger is not around Diva takes over and makes sure he finds his way.
Max got his EWT/West Nile/Influenza/Rhino Vaccine done on 03/11/2020.
On 03/24/2020 he got Vaccines for Potomac Horse fever+rabies and Strangles.
His total vet bill was $150.
(The total vet bill for all the rescues on those 2 days was $1496, which also included some medication, radiographs, Coggings-Tests and the farm call)

Update October 30, 2019
Max had to spend three days in the clinic last week because he had Potomac horse fever.
We are happy that he is all better now and so far no signs of Laminitis.
