This little guy was saved out of the slaughter pipeline by paying his bail on 05/29/2022 and he arrived at our farm on Sunday June 5, 2022. After we let him settle in for a little bit I took his temperature and it was at 101.9 so I gave him a tiny dose of Banamine of 2,5cc. Unfortunately, the next morning his temp was up even higher at 102.8 so I gave him another dose of Banamine which was 4cc fitting his weight. A couple hours later he was showing signs of possibly getting a colic. I tried to get one of my vets down but they had so much going on and couldn't come. I could have taken him to the clinic but Zeke already has a forever home lined up and their vet was willing to come. So we did the normal procedure of tubing and he got an IV. I was hoping he would feel better soon but shortly after the vet left things got way worse. The little man just started rolling like crazy obviously in quite a bit of pain so I started walking him. I kept hoping he would poop because at this point I still thought he had an impaction. By 10pm I called my vet again but the situation was still the same, they were still swamped. Again, I could have taken him to the clinic but I didn't want to put him in my trailer. He's too small to be tied up in a slant and I didn't want him to start rolling in the trailer, possibly casting himself while I'm driving to the clinic which is over an hour away. So I called the vet on call from the other clinic. His only solution was to euthanize him without even seeing him. I told him I'm not giving up on this little guy without a fight. So I kept walking him and sometimes let him lay down trying to keep him from rolling. By 12.30 am I couldn't keep him on his feet anymore. That's when it hit me and I thought maybe this is not a colic from impaction, maybe he's got really bad ulcers because some things didn't quite add up over time. He wasn't sweaty and he never seemed super lethargic. So I gave him a full tube of Ulcer Gard praying this would help. About 1.5 hrs later he slowly started to calm down. Obviously still super uncomfortable, but not nearly as bad as it was. Over the next few hours he started to relax more and more and at 5 am he peed one more time and then finally just rested calmly. That's when I fell asleep watching him. I woke up at 6:30 am and he was just looking at me. I was so relieved and happy.
My vet Dr. Skylar came out a few hours later. She agreed that the Banamine and the tubing with Epsom salt could have very well inflamed existing ulcers. She took blood and did an SAA on him which came back pretty high at 1340. She gave him another bag of IVs and injected Exede. She also took a nasal swab and blood for lab work if needed. Zeke is definitely fighting an infection so right now we are still trying to keep his temperature down but we are also treating him with UlcerGard and Sucralfate for ulcers. Luckily, so far he seems to be doing good. Thank God!
His new owners came to see him every day and even had their farrier come out today to do his hooves.
Hopefully Zeke will recover soon. He's scheduled for 06/17/2022 with Dr. Johnson for another check up and hopefully healthy enough to get vaccinated.
The horse in the picture is Merlin who came with him from the same kill lot. The big boy is protecting his little friend all the time following him around.
Any small donations towards his cost are greatly appreciated! Thank you and God bless!
